'This volume called Trans-Asia seeks to provide a focus on women artists working in and across countries within Asia, whose lives and modes of address are simultaneously local, diasporic and global; touching both national and international concerns. The articles here point to the different approaches across several generations in particular countries - in China, Korea, Indonesia and Pakistan - and contain many different elements of "national" and trans-national histories. The problematic definition of "feminist" in relation to contemporary art in the region and to the invention or creation of a category of "women's art" is discusses in each article or interview by artists and critics alongside the question of women's rights and the visibility of women artists in patriarchal and male-dominated cultures.'
