This publication is produced in occasion of Japanese artist Kazumi Nakamura's solo exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo, from March to May 2014.

Nakamura is known for developing his own painting style in the 1980s that attempted to move beyond American Abstract Expressionism. To the artist, these Western modernist works were self-contained in the sense that they were reduced to the picture plane itself in terms of visual language and cannot point or suggest to something else. In light of this, Nakamura produced paintings in series, developing differences from a single motif using a number of ways, so that paintings can speak to each other and meaning be postulated.

This exhibition offers an overview of the artist's oeuvre from his early career to his recent works.

Includes a biography and a bibliography of the artist.
