Fukuhara Shinzo (1833-1948) represents the start of Japanese landscape photography. He was one of Japan's leading photographers during the Taisho and early Showa periods, but his main job was running the cosmetics company Shiseido in Ginza. He spent much of 1912 and 1913 traveling around Europe and photographing the Seine. In 1921, he set up Shashin-Geijutsu-sha, a publishing company specializing in art photography and subsequently went on to publish a series of photograph collections. A recurring theme in Fukuhara's work is the shoreline or water's edge.
