Qiuqiu

Excerpt from Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art 2012, The Macao Museum of Art, Macau S.A.R., 2012, p. 104: '3 May 2011 is the birthday of Qiuqiu. I hid all my personal features under a black cloth, used my body as Qiuqiu's carrier, and intervened in the public space to express my appeal. Over 4 months and 22 shows, the paces of Qiuqiu covered Chengdu, Xi'an, Beijing, and Shijiazhuang, etc. Hidden under the black cloth, I kept receiving many different responses towards Qiuqiu reflecting outward projections of morals and values from various regions, social classes, and public occasions. Consequently, in my opinion, the most critical sense of Qiuqiu did not lie on the innovations of body language, nor on the egregious topic and shocking effect brought about by the interventions in different public places. Whereas, when such interventions accumulated, Qiuqiu turned into a ruler, which measured different social values on its unified standard. It is the every mark on this ruler that represents the every real and fresh wound on the contemporary social situations and values.'

The performance took place in 6 cities in China, including Chengdu, Xi'an, Shijiazhuang, Beijing, Guiyang, and Shanghai.
