This material was published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title. As mentioned in the foreword by the organisers, this exhibition, which reviews Japanese art between 1945 and 1960, was meant to be a proposal for the current Japanese art to reconsider the significance of the socially and politically charged creative activities. ‘Explanatory notes’ shows that the catalogue was written chronologically, in order to present realism in post-war Japan along with the social/political history and art/cultural history. Succinct texts to describe social and cultural events are given at the beginning of the each year. Works cited are listed in ‘explanatory notes'. Each section (year) consists of plates of works, and government’s/ American government’s/ United Nations’/ artists’/ artists groups’/ political groups’ statements. List of works is available in the back of the book.
