Catalogue of the exhibition 'Room Service', which brings together the work of seven artists across two unlikely spaces – a hotel and a renovated factory - in China’s oldest city, Xi’an.

On the occasion of the opening of the Walker Boutique Hotel, each artist transformed one of its rooms into an art experience. Using installation, photography, film, performance and other means of intervention, they explored the notion of art as a service industry and the overlap between the private and public. The entire hotel operation, including its staff, guests and kitchen, were incorporated into these 'room services'. In the second venue, a more traditional warehouse space of Xi’an’s premiere art complex, Textile City Art District, the artists installed large-scale works playing on the specificity of the building’s Socialist industrial setting and on greater Xi’an as a historical space. Other works reflect the notion of mass media induced homogenization or the de-contextualization of loaded materials, as well as other notions of time and place. By presenting cutting edge contemporary works in two distinct settings the event questions the notion of ‘exhibition’ itself in the context of today’s contemporary arts.
