Published in conjunction with Shen Yuan's solo exhibition 'Hurried Words' at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, from May to July 2009. Born in Xianyou, Fujian Province in 1959, Shen Yuan trained at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and participated in the landmark 'China/Avant-Garde' exhibition in 1989. Her experience of cultural isolation and identity formation after leaving China for Paris, France in 1990 has profoundly influenced her work, which Guo Xiaoyan notes often 'hovers between the ordinary landscapes of everyday life and the metaphors and transformations of language'. Among the works featured in this catalogue are two installations: Hurried Words, comprising eighty hairdryers blowing out air that inflates coloured 'tongues' at regular intervals, and Landscape, resembling a giant hairbrush, with its bristles topped with human hair. Previous works are also included in this volume. Artist biography provided.
