This is the catalogue of Shilpa Gupta's solo exhibition Altered Altar at Lakeeren - The Contemporary Art Gallery in 1998. In Ranjit Hoskote's essay, Gupta's works are analysed within the context of conceptual art. He wrote, 'Taking Conceptual Art for backdrop as it does, Gupta's is an art of provocation and interrogation. It deals as much with the questions of address and audience as it does with the business of making an art object. She enters the semantic circuit of language, communication and meaning at the point of greatest friction; where the overlap between representation and reality takes place, so that we see the world not only as itself, but as the sum of the influential discourses that tell us about it.'
