'For Anupam Poddar, India's leading contemporary-art collector, being surrounded by works of art is not a luxury. It is a way of life.'
Based in New-Delhi, Anupam Poddar has helped draw international attention to the Indian art scene, while supporting it locally. He purchases works mainly through Indian dealers, and he purchases art that is challenging and provocative: 'It is important for me to be continuously interested in the work and able to live with it.' He adjusts his living space to accomodate his large collection.
Since the 1970s, his mother Lekha Poddar has been a major collector of the Bombay Progressive artists. The two Poddars collaborated to create the Devi Art Foundation with the objective for it to become 'a place that celebrates the experimental undertakings of cutting-edge artists in the region.'
