'In Life Pilgrimages, Tam Wai Ping seeks to investigate the relationship and interchangeability between image and text. Roaming with his camera through Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and China, Tam used his lens to capture the "pace" of people living in different regions of Asia, and his writing to delineate the contemporary Asian landscape.

It took Tam Wai Ping 15 years (2005–2019) to complete the Life Pilgrimages series, through 52 photographs and a series of short texts, he focuses his attention on the changes in value systems that Asia has experienced in the process of modernisation: how British colonial policy has tampered with the relationship between Sri Lankans and their land; how Hong Kong people have lost their "shadows" after the 1997 Handover; what we can learn about democracy from the elections in Taiwan; the traumas that have arisen in Japanese society as a result of the tensions between tradition and reform; and the significance of the phenomenon of "entertainmentalisation" in Chian's modernisation process.' —taken from the back of the book
