Midorikawa Yoichi was a dentist before winning a Canon photo competition that changed his life in 1958. Always an avid photographer, the prize enabled him to visit Europe, become inspired, and embrace photograghy full-time. He worked single-mindedly on Seto Inland Sea scenery and in 1962, his Seto Inland Sea collection won the Photographic Society of Japan's Award of the Year. His technique of using overlays would result in a sea sparkling with rainbow colors that some have criticized for being overly ormamental fabrications, but that the author sees as a personal response to the changing landscape of postwar Japan.
