This catalogue was published in conjunction with 'The Scale of Black', Valentine Willie Fine Art's inaugural exhibition in its Singapore space, held in April 2008. This show features mainly monochromatic works by artists from five Southeast Asian countries. It aims to rehabilitate drawing, the oldest and most primordial of media, as a powerful and uncompromising tool that can transform intangible concepts into compelling two-dimensional works of art. In her essay, Iola Lenzi discusses how drawing remains a "pillar of artistic expression" in Asian contemporary practice and offers a potent retort to an often visually over-saturated world. Artists' biographies are included.
