Chen Cheng Po is a famous painter who lived in Taiwan from the colonial period to Kuomintang’s time. He travelled between Taiwan, Japan and Shanghai. In his works, Chen tries to illustrate the existence of nature and forms by capturing the valuable but transient images. He also believes that art should carry ‘something’.
The author, Li Shu Chu, focuses on Chen's prewar accomplishments and spends many years on collecting and analyzing literature. Through studying art works, she points out that paintings reflects an era, and the painter’s works are closely tied up with time. The book contains a handful of literature, including artist biography, travel records, newspaper clippings, and through reviewing these traces of time and space, it puts forth arguments and new interpretations.
陳澄波是活於日治時代至國民黨時代台灣的著名畫家，並曾往來台灣、日本和上海。他在畫作中極力表現自然和物體形象的存在，捕捉腦裡影像值得描寫的瞬間，並強調藝術須言之有物。
本書作者李淑珠著眼於陳澄波的戰前成就，長年致力收集和分析戰前文獻，藉由具體考察作品，指出畫作能反映時代，畫家作品其實與時代密切相連。書中並附大量藝術家履歷、往來紀錄、報導剪報等相關文獻資料，檢視這些時空交錯的痕跡，並予以佐證、詮釋。
