GUN is an artist collective founded in Niigata, Japan in 1967. Named Niigata Contemporary Artists Collective GUN (新潟現代美術家集団 GUN) with around 15 members when formed, the group renamed as NIIGATA GUN in 1971 and later being known as GUN. After Tetsuo Sekine and Hideharu Sato has joined the group in 1971, together with Tadashi Maeyama, Michio Horikawa, the four artists are being recognised as the representative figure of the group.
This book has documented the development of GUN and its activities from 1967–1975. It includes an essay by Tadashi Maeyama explaining the motivation of forming the group, the manifesto of GUN published in the magazine 眼 (Eye) in 1967. Photo documentation and reviews of exhibitions, symposium and performances including street performances in Furumachi in Niigata (1968), Event to Change the Image of Snow (1970) and 'The Track of Niigata Contemporary Artists Group GUN' (2008), an exhibition held in Nagaoka to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the group.
An essay by Fumihiko Toyama, the transcript of his interview with Tadashi Maeyama, biography of the group and conclusion by Tadashi Maeyama and Michio Horikawa is provided.
