'The Way I Remember Them' is the first North American retrospective of Qureshi's paintings. Trained for years learning techniques of traditional South Asian miniature paintings, the Pakistani artist redirects elements of this tradition to explore the roles that images play in constituting historical memory. Through appropriation of reowned images of the Mughal, Rajput and British eras,  Qureshi deconstructs the coded visual system that have legitimized the rulers for centuries. The idea that historical memory is always subjective forms an important basis of her paintings. Works exhibited were produced from 1993 to 2003. Other than Qureshi's works, comparative materials from the 17th to early 20th century are presented in this catalogue.
