Published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Towards a New Image: Twenty Years of Contemporary Chinese Painting,' this catalogue provides a visual and written document of the development of Chinese painting in the past two decades, through the recent works of twenty internationally acclaimed contemporary Chinese artists. The accompanying essays bring into view the close relationship between historical circumstances and the development of contemporary Chinese art in the past twenty years. They have also shown how by drawing on both resources unique to China and the outside world that the chosen artists have helped bring contemporary Chinese art towards the mainstream global culture.
