This catalogue accompanied the major exhibition of the female Nihonga artist's works at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 2010.  In addition to the important works, the exhibition also presented 88 paintings and 37 sketches including early pieces rarely shown before. With a detailed biography and an interview with Uemura Atsushi, the artist's grandson and also a Nihonga artist, both in Japanese only.  Plates and the list of works is included.

'Born and brought up in Kyoto, Uemura Shoen (1875-1949) entered Kyoto-fu Gagakko (Kyoto Prefectural Art School) where she studied painting with Suzuki Shonen of the Suzuki School.  Later she apprenticed herself also to Kono Bairei and Takeuchi Seiho of the Shijo School.  Distinguishing herself at a young age, Shoen regularly sent her works to shows including the annual Bunten, an art exhibition organized by the Ministry of Education, and pioneered her own style with graceful portrayals. ... While building upon the deep tradition of human portrayal including ukiyo-e and genre painting from early-modern times, Shoen faced the age called modern times when expression of inner feelings and spirituality of the subject was pursued, searching for expression only she would be capable of.'  ―from foreword
