This publication is the result of an international conference held by the Center for Emergent Cultural Studies, National Chiao Tung University at Taiwan. The papers presented place their emphasis on the conceptualisation of visuality, i.e. how an entity is imagined and seen through visual and spatial means, how such imagination is burdened with political, historical, and cultural meanings, and thus how the visual field is related to the questions of imperialism, postcolonialism, and subjectivities of the colonizer and the colonised.

什麼樣的影像是賞心悅目、心嚮往之,甚至是膜拜仿效的崇高對象? 
影像牽連了好與壞、美與醜、悅目與刺眼等屬於價值系統的美感經驗。這些視覺上的層級區分、安定或是排除,其實已經受制於較大的歷史文化脈絡之召喚和辨認過程。因此,影像所牽扯的,無論是帝國、亞洲、主體的問題,或是大眾文化與日常生活的面向,如同複雜的檔案系統,必然涉及有關意識形態以及族群、階級、性別、國家之權力位置的問題。(摘自背頁。)
