Zhang Hongtu is a New York-based Chinese artist who is internationally acclaimed for his post-modern images of Mao Zedong. He is also the first visual artist-in-residence invited by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The resulting exhibition of the artist-in-residence programme featured Zhang’s experiments with new media including soy sauce, lipstick and charcoal, and a series of work whose content was evoked by these non-traditional media. The exhibition also featured a retrospective display of the artist’s earlier work providing a clear and thorough account of Zhang Hongtu’s creative development. This catalogue serves as a documentation of the various activities that took place in the course of the programme, from April to June, 1996. A biography of the artist is included.
