Hsia Yan is one of the key players in the retrospective study on the development of modern and contemporary Taiwanese art after World War II. After moving to Taiwan along with KMT (Guomintang) soldiers in 1949, he joined the Eastern Art Group (Dongfang Huahui), which played a dominant role in the art scene in 1950s Taiwan, as well as the May Painting Association (Wuyue Huahui). He moved to Paris in 1963, followed by to New York in 1968. Recently he participated in the third Asia Pacific Triennial at the Queensland Art Gallery, Australia in 1999. He now lives and works in Shanghai, China.
