This is a catalogue for the solo exhibition of Chinese artist Yan Shilin at Line Gallery, Beijing, in 2012. A recent graduate of the Department of Sculpture at Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, his works are intimately linked to his personal history and experience of growth and its relation to how he came to art (Yan was sent to his grandparents from infantry until the age of four since his direct family was not affluent; he also fought very hard in order to obtain a place at the Academy). This history and subsequent realist sculptures in turn reflect a mode of historical telling via the lens of the individual, which can be transcended as a general level. Yan's works capture his fantasy as how to cope with the real.
Includes essays and an artist's biography.
Please note that the Archive also holds another publication with images of exhibited works only.
