In the paintings presented in this catalogue of Yang Shaobin's solo exhibition at Chinese Contemporary in London in 2001, one finds and feels the intense pain, both physical and psychological, of his subjects, no matter whether they appear in his paintings or his sculptures.
Some have labelled Yang as a Cynical Realist artist, but in the accompanying essay, Julia Colman argues that the sense of detachment and humour, a quality which characterises Cynical Realist art, in fact, cannot be found in the paintings of Yang. Thus, the paintings of Yang Shaobin belong to a niche of their own. Artist biography is included, together with a short note written by the artist.
