Catalogue produced in conjunction with the inaugural exhibition of works by seminal and internationally renowned Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, at the Center for International Contemporary Arts (CICA), 27 Sept 1989 - 31 Jan 1990. This retrospective was initiated by CICA's recognition of Western Art History's lack of knowledge of Asian art and culture, and seeks to redress balance by placing emphasis on a more incisive and indepth investigation of Kusama's art. Covering a wide area on Kusama's art, the writers, Bhupendra Karia and Alexandra Munroe place the artist in the cultural context of Japan's history; from Imperialism, the Meiji Restoration, to the Second World War and Postwar art movements, as well as focussing on her mental illness and meteoric rise to fame. Includes chronological biographical notes with photographs of the artist from early childhood onwards.
