Following the events at Tienanmen Square in 1989 efforts were redoubled by the Chinese regime to repress any artistic activity not involved with traditional moveable pictures, sculpture or calligraphy. As a result Zhang Huan, who turned to performance art and its documentation when he moved to Beijing in 1990, was marginalized. The authorities viewed performance art with suspicion and so Zhang Huan was forced to withdraw from the public arena. Zhang Huan gradually returned to the public arena and used his art to voice his social criticisms and commentary. This monograph, produced by the Hamburg Arts Association, contains examples of both his studio work and his public performances. The book includes contributions from Yilmaz Dziewior, Yu Yeon Kim and Hans Günter Golinski in both English and German. A biography of Zhang Huan is included.
