This booklet is produced on the occasion of Liu Xiaodong's Hotan Project. Liu Xiaodong's Hotan Project & Xinjiang Research, a live painting project by Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong. Through visiting the countryside, Liu found in Hotan, Xinjiang some jade excavation workers and their families, and painted them against the background of the White Jade River. The four paintings were then exhibited at Xinjiang Art Center, Urumqi, from 25 August to 8 October 2012, and at Today Art Museum, Beijing, from 13 January to 23 February 2013.

The excavation and marketing of Hotan Jade has formed a economic chain linking different strata of the society, and intervening from the bottom of this chain Liu studies Xijiang in terms of its unique geographies and the expansion of the mainland's economic and cultural linkages.

《劉小東在和田&新疆新觀察》是藝術家劉小東的一個現場繪畫項目，他通過田野走訪的工作方法，在新疆和田找到一些採玉工及他們的家屬，以玉龍喀什河為背景，進行現場寫生，創作了四幅油畫作品，於2012年8月25日至10月8日在烏魯木齊國際展覽中心展出。和田玉的開采和銷售，在全國形成了一個波及不同階層的經濟鏈，藝術家從這個鏈條的低端入手，以藝術的手法探討新疆這個獨特的地域與廣闊內地的經濟和文化聯繫。
