A History of Exhibitions: Shanghai 1979-2006 is a comprehensive archive developed out of curatorial research for the exhibition, 'History in the Making: 1979-2009'. The exhibition making practices of Shanghai-based artists is a very intriguing research subject due to its characteristic, which challenged exhibition format and it’s experimentation. Taking a chronological approach, the book presents 34 exhibitions from 1979 to 2009, focusing primarily on group exhibitions with a select number of solo exhibitions, in which the artists had specific interests in rethinking the way the artwork was promoted and presented. Specific works of art that take the form of exhibitions are also included.
The early exhibitions are significant for introducing so-called new art or new practices—early experimentations that at the time didn’t have a clear status, and were considered more underground. There are also exhibitions acted as sites for the production of knowledge throughout this period of history in China, illustrating a very different role for museums. In the years to come, a number of museums appeared together with the emergence of a commercial sector, influencing the way artists worked and organized themselves, who put less focus on the exhibition making.
