Exhibition catalogue accompanying Bedri Baykam's show at three locations (Ataturk Cultural Centre, Istanbul, 4-26 Jan; Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris, 4 June-13 July; and Siyah Beyaz Galeri, Ankara, 27 Sept-23 Oct) in 2002. "Girly Plots" is a collection of mixed media paintings and works using soft porn images. Says Robert C. Morgan, "'Girly Plots' are fused with photographic images of strip-tease girls and soft-porn imagery. As an ensemble, they question many of the assumptions that underpin the history of erotic representation. Bedri's paintings are less a spiteful act of repression than a direct visual encounter with fantasies of male indulgence. They are reminiscent and nostalgic of past encounters - earlier paintings from the Neo-Expressionist eighties - that suggest, in their opportune way, idealized memories of playful tristes, voyeuristic act of orgiastic engagement, and ultimately a reprieve from the pragmatic world of economics and politics." (extract taken from Morgan's essay in 'Girly Plots' p.59). Also includes essays by David Applefield and Levent Calikoglu.
