During the 1990s, Chen Danqing had been copying reproductions of various classical and contemporary paintings created by both Chinese and Western artists. He also began to paint them in juxtapositions. A selection of these still life paintings are presented in this catalogue which was published in-conjunction with the artist’s solo exhibition at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1998, as part of the Artist-in-Residence programme. The accompanying essays provide a study of Chen’s choice of subjects. A brief biography of the artist is also included.
