Video recording of interview with Pak Sheung Chuen, conducted by wen yau in 2006.
In this interview Pak discusses his own conception of art practice and agrees to designate his art as “life art” (01:49, 29:23), that is, art closely related to the artist’s experience and comes into being in everyday encounters.
Pak explains the ambiguity and sometimes poetic quality found in his art that often deals with interpersonal relationships, distance in time and space, etc. (05:28-11:31). He talks about being part of a Christian community, and that his faith has shaped his personality and character from a young age (16:00-26:00, 42:50-54). He also regards the Chinese cartoon artist Feng Zikai as one of his biggest influences, in terms of life philosophy and worldview (54:25-57:42).
Pak admits that his artworks can provoke response from the public, but is not powerful enough to change society or to affect political situations (17:24-39:25).

Context

The Hong Kong Performance Art Research project launched in April 2005, in parallel with ‘Hong Kong Performance Art On the Move’, a local performance art festival. It consisted of latitudinal and longitudinal studies of the development of performance art in Hong Kong and included extensive documentation as well as a chronology of Hong Kong performance art since the mid-1970s. As part of the project artists active in the field were invited to conduct interviews with each other.
