This is the catalogue of Kim Hong Joo's exhibition at Kukje Gallery from 31 October to 23 November 2002. Featured in the exhibition are the artist's 'flower paintings'. Kim Wonbang comments, 'The picture planes of these paintings are arranged in a way far from the conventional painting practice. A flower or a leaf takes up the entire canvas. This is true of most of Kim Hong Joo's work. Elements such as spatial division, contrast, or relationship within the picture are all ignored. It is as if an inflating subject has been momentarily paused by the edge of the canvas... Another characteristic of Kim's flower paintings is the 'empty details'. The infinite number of minute brushstrokes is 'details for details' sake, without having any responsibility to reproduce the whole. These details bear no semblance to the actual physical appearance of the actual flower of leaf, but merely a kind of self-obsessed fetish that enjoys endless sustenance and excess.' Artist biography is provided at the back of the catalogue.
