As with the works in his first one-man show held in 1994, the paintings presented in this catalogue of Zhu Wei’s second solo exhibition continue to offer the artist’s vision of contemporary life and society in China as they exist in his mind. The contributors remark on the artist’s reclusive lifestyle and the choice of using ink as the medium, which lend a measure of subtlety to the sarcastic symbols and protest messages apparent in his works. Zhu is further compared to the traditional Chinese scholar who bears the Confucian virtue of moral obligation, as exemplified in Zhu’s description of himself as someone ‘with a strong craving for sacred purity and a love of a good time, but, who deep inside harbours an aspiration to build a new, idealistic world.’ This catalogue includes a biography of the artist.
