Since 1996, Hong Lei began to take photographs which modelled on the imperial court paintings of the Song Dynasty by using real birds and flowers and arranging them in a composition of the court flower-and-bird painting of Song Dynasty with an aristocratic taste. But since he depicted dead birds, the images look sad at the same time, and hence the title: ‘Beautiful and Tragic’. The present monograph brings together photographic works on this theme taken by Hong Lei from 1996 to 2000. Also included here are articles by noted critics and a biography of the artist.
