'The exhibition, "Beyond Hiroshima: The Return of the Repressed, Wartime Memory, Performativity and the Documentary in Contemporary Japanese Photography and Video Art", marks seventy years since the end of the Asia-Pacific War and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The exhibition presents the ways in which Second- and Third Generation artists explore the memory and traumas of the war and their influence on contemporary Japanese society. In contrast to exhibitions that engage with the art of a non-Western culture as one unified whole, this exhibition examines a specific, intra-Japanese issue that is currently at the centre of an animated public debate. In many ways, the discourse around war memory in Japan parallels the current debates and issues that occupy Israeli society concerning past memories, their reflection in the present, and the way in which a contemporary society considers, confronts, and critiques past events.' - excerpts from introduction by Professor Assaf Pinkus, Director of the Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery
