It is the catalogue published in conjunction with the solo exhibition by Shinro Ohtake at the Base Gallery from 12 June to 19 July 2000.
In the series 'Japanorama', Ohtake rendered the bizarre landscapes of present-day Japan, in blinding vivid colors. It pursued a surface intentionally and utterly bereft of spatial or historic depth. In such works, Ohtake captured magnificenly the reality of the Japanese landscape, for removed from Western conceptions of depth of 'space' and 'history'. Yet we must remember that from his earliest exhibitions, Ohtake has, at least to the casual glance, largely pursued a world of painting in sharp contrast to this.
Artist biography is included.
