The flat yet vibrant colours, the sexual anxiety, the voyeuristic view, the vulgarity of mundane contemporary life and the frozen actions of the figures mark the oeuvre of Song Yonghong. The accompanying essays in this catalogue show that under the paintings’ cartoon-like humour lies the artist’s anger and emotional uncertainty about modern China, and in particular, about the problems arising from the increasing freedom enjoyed by the people and the dismantling established moral and social rules. A biography of the artist is included.
