Curator Alexandra Munroe laments the inadequate attention paid to the influence of Asian art and philosophy on modern and contemporary art in the United States. Thus, this exhibition aims at tracing 'how the art, literature, and philosophical systems of the Orient became known, reconstructed, and transformed with American cultural and intellectual currents'.

This accompanying catalogue features critical essays expounding the different currents of Asian influence on the development of modern and contemporary American aesthetics. A chronology of American-Asian encounters from 1784 to 1989 is included for contextual understanding. Images of exhibits and brief artist biographies are also featured.
