This edition of the Taiwan Biennial aims to give an accurate portrayal of the current art scene in Taiwan. Based on research into 1,700 documented art exhibitions that took place in 2008 and 2009, the curatorial team identified seven core themes or trends: 'Local Breakthroughs', 'A New-Style Visual Art Space: Connecting and Transforming', 'Rethinking the Language of Installation', 'Innovations in Oriental Materials', 'New Trends in Easel Paintings', 'Variations on Image Art' and 'Naive Approaches to Art'. Representative artists and artworks were then allocated to these categories. To further diversify the pool of artists, the museum invited submissions from the public. Works selected through this process were also allocated to the above categories.
Artist biographies are included in this catalogue. Participating art spaces include Taiwan New Arts Union and VT Artsalon.
