Roberto Chabet's Boat and paintings by Danilo Dalena and Fernando Modesto in 'Regarding Place, No Place', an exhibition by Roberto Chabet, Danilo Dalena, Fernando Modesto, and Antonio Austria, in The Art Center, SM Megamall, 12 - 25 May 1996.
Chabet wrote, 'Art implies place. It depicts space, exists in space, and is perceived in space. Placement, location is central in art. The artist stakes out territories, establishes boundaries, or represents a sense of place. This sense of place is the artist's sense of self.
Place for Austria means a 'genre' kind of place with all its local color - Cubao, San Juan, its pool rooms, barber shops, panciterias (noodle shops).
Place for Dalena is Pakil, Laguna, his hometown. Specifically it means his house, its interiors, and the Dalenas hanging on the walls, creating places within places.
Modesto's sense of place is that of an expat in Indonesia, an exotic surrounding, almost paradisiacal, but exilic, and infected with melancholy and homesickness.
Chabet's sense of place is literal - the exhibition space and the virtual spaces generated by his installation. Though seemingly non-referential the work alludes to geography - or geographies.' (Excerpt from the exhibition notes)
