As a valuable resource on contemporary art in the region, AAA remains committed to making our materials accessible. We welcome educators to visit us with their students to discover how our library and archives can enrich their learning, and to receive ongoing support on integrating contemporary art into their curriculum.

To give students an entry point into AAA Collections, we offer a selection of workshops organised around specific themes that go beyond a standard introduction to the archive. These Thematic Workshops are hands-on, creative experiences that guide students towards inquiry-based learning. Should students have their own research interests, we offer an additional option that tailors the workshop around their needs. To plan a visit to AAA, please fill out the form below. Submit your request at least three weeks in advance of the day you wish to visit. The ideal number of people per group is thirty or less.

For enquiries, please contact us at +852 2844 1112 (ext. 126) or email learn@aaa.org.hk.

Artists often employ different technologies in the documentation of their individual practices, and institutional archival methods evolve accordingly in response. In this workshop, a range of artistic documents—from sketchbooks, to photographs, to cassettes—will prompt students to consider how different methods of preservation are geared toward different archival needs. Ultimately, the workshop will draw out students’ personal connection to the archive and ask how documentation might look in the context of their everyday lives.

The Book as a Creative Medium

Explore the creative potential of the book form through artists’ books in AAA’s library.

In this school tour, students will have the opportunity to flip through artists’ books in AAA Collections and discover a new form of artistic expression. Through creative exercises and in-depth discussions, students will learn how the book form can be modified, reinvented, and reinterpreted to create new meanings and possibilities. The tour will address the historical development and contemporary manifestations of the medium of artists’ books to ask: What is and what can be an artist’s book? How can you create and innovate with the book form? What does the book form offer that is different from other art media?

The Story That I Haven't Told

Every moment in life shapes who we are. How do you keep a record of the moments that are important to you? Can these records represent the full story of what you have experienced?

In this workshop, participants will make use of a mixture of archival materials, creative exercises, and personal narratives to examine the nature of memory, and what can or cannot be done to preserve it. During the process, students will be given tools to critically examine records for the “gaps” in our memory and consider the theme of memory within artistic practice.

Creative Research through the Archive

AAA has one of the most valuable collections of material on the recent history of art from Asia. In this school tour, we activate our Collections by guiding students towards inquiry-based learning and creative research. Students will be asked to prepare themes or topics of interest in advance, and our team will introduce different methodologies to assist them in using our books and archival materials. This tour will be particularly beneficial for students preparing for their research workbook or comparative study.
