This catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition 'The Epoch of Yu Gong' held at Shanghai Gallery of Art in 2006.
The artist writes, "The myth of the Old Man Yu Gong who moved mountains has always been spiritually symbolic for revolutionary movements who sought to transform China. Similarly, documentary photography provides important insights into the real world and it is through the camera lens that we observe and can consider our historic circumstances. After a century of change, should we now take a fresh look at the history and landscape of today's China?"
In marked comparison with other artists, the idiosyncrasy and uniqueness of Zeng Li's photographs are evidence of a vision. From the advent of his photographic creation, Zeng Li has devised a diverse methodology for his oeuvre. While traveling, he documents objectively with the camera lens our collective memories that are specific to an era. He wishes to construct a museum of images of today’s history. Knowing how difficult it is to achieve this, this vision requires a lifetime of perseverance and devotion. Moreover, the most demanding of it all is whether the content captured by the artist reflects the sediment of our history.
The catalogue, housed in a cardboard slipcase, includes essays by Weng Ling and Christopher Phillips as well as an index of works.
