This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the same title held at Franklin Furance, New York from 15 March to 20 April 1985. Curated by Yoshiaki Tono, it explores the ways in which artists delve into the book as a medium. While art books are substitutes for seeing actual art works, artists' books are considered to be completed art objects themselves. The works exhibited 'attempt to break down and rearrange the conventional hierarchy of the book-to-reader relationship'. Tono further proposes several classifications of the relationship between the artist and the book: The Book as Documentation and Memory Holder, The Book as Unopenable Object, The Book as Performance, The Book as Concept, The Book as Picture and The Book as Skin.
Includes black and white illustrations of selected works. Exhibition checklist provided.
