Originally a high art enjoyed only by the literati, calligraphy has come to be enjoyed by a broader spectrum ranging from farmers, workers to academics and professional artists. Moreover, with the prevalence of Western influence in China today, the passion for calligraphy has continued unabated. In this catalogue, published in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Brushed Voices: Calligraphy in Contemporary China’ held at the Miriam and Ira D.Wallach Art Gallery in 1998, the author attempts to provide a revision of traditional approaches towards this art form, through the essay and the works of twenty-one contemporary Chinese artists. Brief biographical information of the artists and descriptions of their works are provided, in both English and Chinese. A selected bibliography is also included.
