'The exhibition and book have been conceived by David Elliott, and his title invokes the subtle irony and subversive techniques adopted by a new generation of artists in rebellion against both the 'kawaii,' or 'cute,' aesthetic of mainstream Japanese culture and what they regard as its built-in conservatism. Elliot's essay provides a survey of the artists and explores many of the social issues facing Japan today, including the rise of feminism, the decline of the 'salaryman,' and the latent instability of an aging, shrinking society. A contribution by Tetsuya Ozaki illuminates the history and culture of Japan's current Heisei era, which began in 1989 after the death of Emperor Hirohito.' (Excerpt from Front Flap)
