Catalogue of Cai Guo-Qiang's solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien, Austria in 1999. Gunpowder, fire, water, wood and earth are among the ingredients that Cai Guo-Qiang uses to exploit his knowledge of Chinese medicine, Taoism, chaos theory and physics. Cai belongs to a generation of Chinese artists who stress their country's culture and history in their work. Nevertheless, the work of this artist is never merely folksy or exotic, it stands between the old and the new, east and west, traditional values and modern technology, local and global contexts.
Featured in the catalogue are five works by Cai: I am the Y2K Bug, Gunpowder Drawing for "Dragon Sight Sees Vienna", Change of Seasons, Spring Breeze and Dragon Sight Sees Vienna. With interview by Gerald Matt and artist biography.
