‘I have a deep admiration for traditional Chinese ink painting: it has an inner purity and luminosity that shines like hidden gold. It moves and stimulates me. I am also attracted by the boldness and unexpectedness of contemporary art. In my work, I have tried to incorporate qualities of both. In addition, I am fascinated by the power of the Neolithic pottery created by craftsmen 5,000 years ago, and have used it as an inspiration in my art… The ‘Distant Echoes’ series is the direct result of these years of effort and exploration.’ – Deng Lin. Essays which provide a study of Deng’s ‘Distant Echoes’ series, and a biography of the artist are included in this catalogue.
