I Miss Fanta

Excerpt from Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art 2012, The Macao Museum of Art, Macau S.A.R., 2012, p. 65: 'In June 2010, the advertisement boards of Coca Cola and Sprite near the Senado Square of Macao were removed, since the boards had blocked the signage of a renowned jewellery shop. The advertisement boards signify the 43-year collective memories of Macao, and are also a symbol of Hong Kong's cultural memories in the 1970s. Today, there are lots of Hong Kong franchise brands in Macao. The disappearance of those old boards could be seen as a visual cultural phenomenon in urban cities which marked the local, regional, and even global economic symbol cycle.

In this performance art, I tracked down the demolished boards, measured their sizes, and conducted research on their historical data. Next, I reproduced a pocket-sized advertisement board and imitated the hanging of such a sign on the darkest old buildings in Mong Kok, which will be torn down by the Hong Kong Urban Renewal Authority soon. I tried hard to let the old advertisement board in Macao, which was produced under the influence of Hong Kong's economic development, to light up again in Hong Kong. I believe that these last moments could give a footnote to the visual memories and intangible cultural heritage of the city.

(The signages of Coca Cola and Sprite were both hung on the same building, yet that of Fanta was located in another unsold building, and it is for this reason why Fanta's signage still exists. However, Fanta was separated from Coca Cola and Sprite forever; hence 'I Miss Fanta'.)'

This performance installation was produced in both Macau S.A.R., China and Hong Kong S.A.R., China.
