This is the catalogue for the group exhibition of four Korean artists organised and held at Daegu Art Museum from March to July 2012.

'Prepared as part of the themed exhibition that presents the philosophical direction and vision of Daegu Art Museum, 'Minsung' is, like the 2011 opening exhibit 'Qi is Full' and 'Life, Nature, Human', an exhibition that intends to inquire into the elements that mark the differentials of Korean contemporary art and suggest an aesthetic significance that is to be inferred from it. suggested a direction for Korean contemporary art by linking it to an aspect of a distinct history of the spirit, while "Life, Nature, Human“ displayed the tendency in Korean contemporary art as a distinct characteristic of life that stems from our material and environmental conditions. At this juncture, 'Minsung' embodies the Korean sentiment and will - manifesting themselves from the aspects of the people's inceptive element and the cultural archetype - as a primal epic of Korean art.
 'Minsung' is another name for 'Korean Expressionism.' The criterion of suggesting a research considered 'Korean Expressionism' can be considered in two accounts: one is an external aspect that surrounds the work in terms of its relation to its material and subject matter, technique and form as well as the spirit of the age. The other has to do with the point of connecting the aspect of 'Korean-ness' found in the inner creative cause of the artist to an expressionist point of view."
There is a bit of a generation gap between the participating artists - Park Saeng Kwang(1904-2001), Suh Yong Sun(1951), Kim Chong Hak(1937) and Hwang Chang Bae(1947-2001). But the fact that their artistic activities dawned during the 70s and 80s and that their worth was acknowledged during that time when one encountered sharp conflicts in Korean art allows one to find a contemporaneous context under which they are grouped, We can also speak of a similarity in the artists mobilizing their creative techniques and subject matters as a response to the demands of the times and a process of seeking ways of creating, intended to awaken the spirit of the age as well as the latent sentiment of the Korean people.
As a word coined to refer to a Korean expressionism, 'Minsung' is composed of 'Min' which means the form of life that includes the form of human life as well as its primal will, and 'Sung,' a temperament or disposition, the historical continuity of which is converted and expressed in the present tense. The two words combined, 'Minsung' implies a distinct sentimentality accumulated from the experiences that stems from a unique climate and the memory of the cultural archetype and culture shared by Koreans/Koreanness is what composes the roots.
In this regard, 'Minsung,' is an archetypal evidence, dealing with folk forms and aspects in folk culture that share historical memories and memorial sentiments that permeate in concrete lives as myth, fable or spirituality.' - from museum's website.
