Catalogue of Li Songsong's solo exhibition at Galerie Urs Meile (China and Switzerland) in 2006 and 2007. Jeff Kelly wrote, 'In an age of mass media images, we tend to "see" history as a visual field - as pcitures. Mostly, those pictures are photographs or film clips... Li Song Song's new paintings, cinematic in scale and yet thickly lathered in paint, reverse the equation, bringing paint to the forefront and placing the pictures of history in the background. It's as if he were painting on paint, not canvas. The images of Khmer Rouge soldiers, an assembly of diplomats at the UN during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, Chinese political rallies and parades, public executions, and state funerals - all published during their time as photographs in the mass media or as images on television or as newsreel footage - seem exhumed by the artist's brush (and knife) from beneath layers of minieral pigment.' Artist biography is provided in the present catalogue.
