This catalogue is published in association with the exhibition ‘New Art from China: Post-Mao Product’ which toured in Australia during 1992-1993. As its title suggests, the exhibition focuses on art produced after the Cultural Revolution. The organizer seeks to question preconceived notions of twentieth century art practice and what constitutes Chinese art since the re-opening of the country. This publication features an essay written by Claire Roberts (curator), introducing the participating artists and the historical background of this ‘New Art from China’. A summary of excerpts written on contemporary Chinese art, a selected bibliography and biographical information of the artists are also provided.
