'Things Artists Do' is an exhibition/publication series by Studio Bibliotheque. It aims to address the gap amidst the onslaught of survey, thematic art shows and books by focusing on the being, consumption and activities of artists. So far, three exhibitions in the series have been completed: 'Autobibliophiles: Artists Who Make or Use Books', and 'Eniminiminimos: Artists Who Make Things Small', both held in Studio Bibliotheque, and 'Hong Kong Anarchitecture Bananas: Artists Who Reclaim Space', co-organized by and held at Artist Commune Hong Kong. This publication is the fourth project in the series.
Preoccupations: Things Artists Do Anyway investigates the things artists do when they are not necessarily making art, without prompting from others or against all odds. From mundane activities like walking and cooking to hobbies like playing with toys and collecting rare things from games like basketball and wardraft to compulsions like teeth grinding, fidgety fingers, pornography and cross-dressing - the contributors to the project seem to have no problem finding ways to fill time.
By publishing artists' private passions, this book aims to be a platform for artists to reflect on and share their creative life, thereby providing a deeper insight into their art.
